It's lovely to see the children back in class, and working hard this week.

On Monday the children wrote recounts of their Christmas, I've enjoyed reading how much fun they have had over the holidays. We have an exciting term ahead of us, please refer to the class page for an overview of the term.

This term we will be focusing on two books in literacy; 'This morning I met a Whale' by Michael Morpurgo, and 'Big Blue Whale' by Nicola Davies. We will be using the books to make predictions about what may happen next in the story; identifying facts and using them in information writing; and extending our grammar work by identifying conjunctions, adverbials, fronted adverbials, and expanded noun phrases. This week we have started reading the first book, and used the pictures and text to generate expanded noun phrases to use throughout the term.

We began the week by consolidating our maths work from last term, using the column method to multiply two or three-digit numbers by a one digit number, and applied our skills to problem solving. We are now learning to use the bus stop method to divide larger numbers by one-digit. This work will continue at the start of next week and the children will apply their learning to problems to show their understanding.

This week we have welcomed our new teaching assistant Mrs McGhie to Blakemere. Mrs McGhie has replaced Mrs Dodd, who is now working in Hatchmere.

A friendly reminder, please remember to record (or ask your child to record) in reading diaries when you have listened to your child read at home. Next week we are visiting Chester Cathedral for a Christingle service on Wednesday and children need a packed lunch on this day.

Thank you for your continued support,

Miss Wood and Mrs McGhie
