We have loved hearing what the children have done over the holidays!

Welcome back to Oakmere following the Christmas holidays. We hope you are well rested and ready for an exciting term. A big well done to all the children who completed their holiday homework, it has been fantastic listening to the children share their holiday news and all work has been displayed in the classroom.

This week we have been very busy getting back into our work. In literacy we have begun a story unit based on traditional tales. We have looked at the story 'Goldilocks', identifying feelings, sequencing the story as a story map, and retelling the story in writing. We will continue to look at various traditional tales over the next few weeks. Why not share your favourite traditional tale from your childhood at home with your child?

In numeracy we have been looking at the value of two-digit numbers, which will support our upcoming addition work. The children used the MacBooks to identify the place value of two digit numbers through a fun game https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/place-value-basketball which you can practice at home.

We are currently beginning to look at alternative pronunciations in phonics, for example 'o' can have a short sound in 'hot' and a long sound in 'gold'. We will look at various pronunciations of graphemes over the next few weeks. All children are currently completing a practice phonic screening check with Miss Wood, which has replaced individual reading this week. There are two upcoming parent phonic evenings, details of which will be on Eezeetrip by next week if you wish to attend. Both events will give you an outline of the year 1 phonic screening check and how to support your child in phonics at home. We look forward to seeing you there!

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Wood and Mr Ashworth
