Pickmere have designed and tested boats, made an alien themed guy ready for bonfire night AND met the USA Rugby 7’s team … all in one week!

At the start of the week, we completed our first set of Year 5 assessments. Children have demonstrated excellent concentration skills and have shown that they are ready to smash their year 5 targets.

Once the assessments were all done and dusted, we had opportunity to focus on our creative skills. Children thoroughly enjoyed designing, making, testing and evaluating their boats in DT. This links to our topic theme ‘Who inspires us?’. In their next topic lesson, children will research some of the world’s most inspirational inventors.

Monday afternoon Pickmere were fortunate enough to have a Hockey session led by Deeside Ramblers Hockey Club – head over to twitter to see some photos that were taken during this session! On Wednesday afternoon we were treated to an excellent sporting assembly that was led by Phil Greening and the USA Rugby 7’s team. A couple of children from Pickmere were lucky enough to be chosen to have a turn at participating in the line out drill!

Our final creative project was focussed on creating an alien themed guy ready for Guy Fawkes! A big thank you to the families that brought in costumes, straw and newspapers.

As you can see, we have had a fantastic final week of the half term.  Mrs Law, Mrs Evans and I would like to say a huge well done to all Pickmere children. It is never easy starting a new academic year, but all of our children have come in with smiles on their faces and ready to learn. We hope you have a great half term and a well deserved rest!

*** What some of our Pickmere children have to say about their learning in year 5 so far ***

This term I have enjoyed many of the activities that we have done, including our trips. Some of my highlights have been in maths. My favourite lessons were when we were learning about Roman Numerals and Place Value. In Literacy, my favourite thing was learning about story writing. My all-time favourite though had to be writing our own story called Flotsam. By Amelie

We really enjoyed the Pilgrim Trip because we learnt lots of things. In CARE we learnt about bullying and cyberbullying, we enjoyed looking at the differences and similarities. Some more highlights of the term include art and our class read ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief.’ This week we really enjoyed seeing the USA Rugby 7’s team in assembly.
