Oakmere/sandymere blog
This week has been very busy indeed the children have started their new swimming timetable at the Delamere baths which they enjoyed immensely. We have also had a highly successful art day where we used a variety of techniques to create the image of an Olympic city and incorporated Olympic silhouette figures.
Pop art and survival skills
We started the week with an introduction to our new literacy unit on Journalistic Writing and an exploration of angles in maths. Our swimming now starts our week on a Monday afternoon but some of us also enjoyed the opportunity to fit in a few more lengths with the early risers length swimming on Tuesday morning.
We revisited the use of apostrophes in our word and sentence level work and following the reminder hope to see more evidence of it in our everyday writing!
Wednesday was a great Art Day and we really enjoyed taking our Olympic theme and adapting it to 1960's Pop Art. Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein provided some great inspiration for photo manipulation and watercolour pieces so 'pop' in to take a look when you have a moment.
We spent a very damp Thursday afternoon learning survival skills. We learnt about Maslow's law of survival and then we all had a go at building our own fires. This proved quite tricky but with a combination of determination a great deal of cotton wool and a good technique using the 'dragon Sneeze' we had some success. Our hard work was rewarded with a lovely WARM mug of hot chocolate and some marshmallows.
Green team 2
This week the Green Team worked in teams. One team braved the outdoors and planted out our Mange Tout in one of our veg beds. They constructed a support for the Mange tout to grow against and learnt how to tease out the seedlings and and plant them in the correct soil depth. They also tasted our growing chives and cleared a few weeds preparing the bed for further seed sowing next week. The second team worked with Mrs Marlow learning how to pot on the tomato seedlings previously planted, potting them on into larger individual plant pots. These tomatoes were then taken home by the Green Team to nurture indoors for a few more weeks while we eagerly await the arrival of our greenhouse in the Jubilee Garden.
Football Tournament
Delamere Academy entered into a Year 2/3 7-a-side football tournament at Calveley Primary School. The children tried extremely hard and were unfortunate not to progress out of their group; only losing one game to Eaton Primary School, who had a child who plays for Manchester United in their team! Well done to all of the children who took part!
Learning about the Olympic Games in 2012
This week the children have really enjoyed learning about the Olympic Games in 2012. They have learned that London is the capital city of England and have created postcards to describe landmarks and recreated photographs using water colours. Hatchmere Class have been learning to find the totals of two numbers using + and = in number sentences and using hop-scotch games to solve problems. They have also be on a discovery and created maps using pastels of Ancient Greece and found out that the Olympic Games came from Olympia.
Angles in Maths
This week the children in Blakemere Class have been learning all bout Angles in Maths. They have learned the names of the different angles; Acute, Right Angle, Obtuse and Reflex Angle. The children worked in pairs for this activity, one child went off to hide an object around the room, and they would then come back and direct their partner using the angles on the Protractor to the direction of the object.
Greek Myths and Legends
We are very excited to be back after the Easter holidays and begin our new topic, Greek myths and legends! Miss Wood's group have been using their ICT skills to research Greek God's and myths, whilst Miss Walker's group have been exploring the features of mythical creatures.
